This article accompanies our Introduction to Workstreams training video and provides a quick overview of how Workstreams help you organize, track, and deliver work more efficiently.
Workstreams are the core building blocks of a Lupl matter. They allow you to break work into clear, manageable steps, assign responsibilities, track progress, and keep everyone aligned without chasing updates.
What Are Workstreams?
Workstreams in Lupl are structured task lists or tables that help legal teams manage the lifecycle of a matter. There are two types of Workstreams available: Task and Custom Workstreams.
Task Workstreams are specifically designed for task lists; as such, each Task Workstream has an Assignee and a Due Date column β this is how Lupl facilitates efficient task-tracking across matters and teams.
Custom Workstreams are more suited to tracking other aspects of a legal matter β such as document lists, witness trackers, conditions precedent, and coordination with outside counsel.
Custom Workstreams do not have Task functionality, but can be converted to a Task workstream if needed.
Workstreams can be customized to any practice area or matter type β from Litigation timetables to Corporate checklists to Real Estate completions.
Creating Your First Matter in Lupl
From the video, youβll see how easy it is to get started:
Create a new matter from the top bar, either from scratch or from a Solution.
Select a Workstream. If starting from scratch, create a new Workstream.
Invite team members and set roles.
Add tasks or customize existing ones to match your workflow.
Link documents from your DMS (iManage, NetDocuments, SharePoint/OneDrive).
Start tracking progress as your team works through tasks.
Note: Lupl does not store your documents; it stores deep links that are only accessible by permissioned users who have signed into their DMS. Your files and their metadata remain securely in your DMS.
Working With Tasks
Within each Workstream, you can:
Assign tasks to collaborators or agents;
Add due dates;
Attach or link documents;
Add new columns such as the Status column (e.g., Not Started β In Progress β Completed)
Reorder tasks through simple drag-and-drop
Use single-select columns to group your task list into distinct sections.
This keeps your matter organized and improves transparency across the team.
Using Solutions to Speed Up Work
Note: Templates in Lupl are now called Solutions. This is mostly a cosmetic and UX change, while the core functionality has not changed.
If your firm has set up Solutions, youβll see:
Pre-built Workstreams
Standardized tasks aligned with firm playbooks
Automatic creation of sections and due dates
Optional pre-configured automations and agents
Solutions help eliminate manual setup, reduce missed steps, and promote consistent quality.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many items can I have in each Workstream?
While there is no upper limit on how many items you can have in a Workstream, we strongly recommend staying below 200 items for optimal performance and usability.
What happened to Templates in Lupl?
You'll notice that Templates has been replaced by Solutions. This is mostly a cosmetic / UX decision, since we believe the word "Solution" more accurately describes repeatable templates that also include pre-set automated and agentic workflows. Rest assured, you'll find all your existing Templates in the Solutions page.
Can I add more than one assignee for a given task?
Absolutely. There is no limit to the number of assignees, though it's important to keep in mind that each assignee will be invidually notified when they're added to Assignee / User Picker columns.
Can I add as many Workstreams as I need?
Yes β while we recommend keeping things tidy for usability and performance, you can add as many Workstreams as your matter requires.
Can I customize Workstreams if my team tracks things in a certain way?
Absolutely, you can customize workstreams by renaming or adding new column types.
What if my workflow changes?
You can update Workstreams at any time. Your changes save instantly and sync for the whole team.
