This article supports the Import from Excel or Word training video. It explains how to convert your existing Excel trackers or Word tables into fully functional Workstreams in Lupl β so you can stop manually recreating checklists and start using them as living, collaborative workflows.
Why Import Your Existing Trackers?
If your team currently uses Excel status trackers or Word table checklists - anything ranging from legacy precedent templates with tables to process guides stored as spreadsheets or docs - you can bring them straight into Lupl and instantly turn them into something much more dynamic. In Lupl, you'll benefit from:
Structured data in workstreams
Assignable tasks with due dates and notifications
Dashboards and status tracking
Integrated with your everyday tools (like Outlook, your DMS and Teams)
Automated workflows
No retyping. No copy/paste. No manual rebuild.
How the Import Tool Works
You can import from:
π’ Excel (.xls / .xlsx)
Lupl reads the first sheet of your workbook and converts it into a single Workstream.
π΅ Word (.doc / .docx)
If your Word document contains a table, Lupl converts that table into a Workstream.
Like Excel imports, Lupl will import the first table it sees in your Word document if more than one exists.
What Lupl Creates for You
When you upload your file:
Each row becomes a task
Each column becomes a task field (such as Description, Owner, Due Date, Section, Status, etc.)
You can map your columns to Lupl fields during import
Your new Workstream is fully editable after creation
Itβs the fastest way to transform old checklists into something dynamic and collaborative.
Import Limits (to Keep Things Fast & Clean)
To ensure a smooth import experience:
Lupl imports from the first sheet only ;
Maximum of 20 columns and 200 rows
The import creates one Workstream per file.
If your source has more content than this, we recommend splitting it into logical chunks before importing.
Best Practices for a Clean Import
Before uploading:
Make sure the header row accurately names your columns
Remove blank rows or unnecessary formatting
Check for hidden worksheets
Place your checklist in the first sheet (if using Excel)
If using Word, ensure it's the first table.
Confirm your Word table uses real table formatting β not columns made with tabs
These small prep steps help produce a clean, predictable Workstream.
After Importing
Your imported Workstream behaves just like any other Workstream in Lupl:
Add sections;
Edit tasks;
Assign owners;
Add due dates;
Link documents from your DMS;
Apply automation rules; and
Save as a Solution Template for reuse.
This is especially useful when standardizing firm playbooks.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I combine imported items into a single matter?
Yes β import multiple files and add each Workstream to the same matter.
